If you run a German company, or an international group with a German entity, there is a government grant that quietly covers up to 80% of the cost of professional consulting. It applies to AI strategy work, most mid-sized companies qualify, and remarkably few use it. This guide explains how it works in 2026 and how to claim it without drowning in German bureaucracy.

What the BAFA programme funds

BAFA, Germany's Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, runs a programme called “Förderung unternehmerischen Know-hows” (promotion of entrepreneurial know-how). It subsidises management consulting for small and medium-sized companies across strategy, organisation, and digitalisation. AI strategy consulting, meaning the question “where does AI pay off in our business, and how do we get there?”, clearly qualifies.

One framing matters: the grant funds consulting, not software development. The deliverable is a strategy: prioritised use cases and an implementation roadmap. Implementation itself is a separate step afterwards.

The exact amounts by region

The grant applies to consulting fees up to an assessment base of EUR 3,500 (net). What you get back depends on where your company is located:

In practice: a EUR 3,500 consulting engagement costs a company in Magdeburg, Rostock, or Trier an effective EUR 700. A company in Munich, Hamburg, or Berlin pays an effective EUR 1,750.

Who can apply

• Small and medium-sized companies with a registered office or permanent establishment in Germany
• Under 250 employees
• Under EUR 50m annual revenue

That covers most of the German Mittelstand, and it includes German subsidiaries of international groups, as long as the German entity itself meets the SME criteria.

The critical rule: apply first, start second
